Day 4
Today we learned about the media, and how they trick us into thinking their product will make us better. I told the students that they are the ones that are targeted because 8-18 years olds influence a big portion of purchases. We looked at advertisements to guess what they were selling. The thing we saw all 16 of them have in common was they used attractive people, people having fun, or families that seemed to be happy. We discussed whether it was the product that makes us who we are, or our personality. I explained the media is not bad, it does inform us of new products, but we need to analyze the commercials, and see what we are really buying. We need to think "Do I need this?", or "Do I WANT this?" then decide why it is this brand I am choosing. These considerations will help us be wise consumers. My lesson plan is included.

Day Four
Today our class was cut short. We tried to do a podcast to make an anti-drug commercial, but we ran out of time. Group 1 went, but the sound did not turn out that loud, so we will all do our commercial on Friday, April 17. All of the students got their sentences written today, so we should be able to record everyone. Hope everyone has a great Spring Break, don't eat too much Easter ham!! View my lesson plan. Also, feel free to ask me questions, leave commments etc.

Day Three
Todays lesson involved a PowerPoint about drug abuse. We went over 5 different drugs and the side effects. Please view the presentation below. The students also got to see what it would look like if they were drunk!! They all took turns wearing "drunk goggles", which imitates what it would look like if they had too much to drink. They tried to play simple games, and found that it was a lot more challenging. By doing this lesson, they were able to imagine what it would be like to drive while under the influence. I have also included my lesson plan.
Day Two
Today we learned about food, and got real hungry!! I brought in 3 bowls of Fruit Loops, and let the class decide which one was the correct portion. We learned that most people pick the one that has too much, teaching us that we tend to eat too much. I handed out food labels and we compared a few of them to see which one would be the healthier option. We learned that choosing a pita over a bun was healthier, and Smart Balance Margerine had half the calories and fat of real butter. I showed them the correct serving size of a bottle of soda, and how to tell that for themselves. David and I then showed the class how to portion out a correct serving of potato chips, and how it is better to put chips in a bowl to prevent ourselves from eating too much. At last, we finished our nutrient assignment. I have included my lesson plan.
Day One
Today in my first class, we got to know each other a little better. I introduced myself to the class by letting them know that I was a senior at FSU, and obtaining a teaching degree in Health Education and Family and Consumer Sciences. I told the class about my son, who also attends this school and is in the 5th grade. I discussed the things that I enjoy doing with my son, such as hiking, camping, WVU football and basketball. As well as, attending the sporting events that he is involved in. The class then told me their name, and one thing that they liked. I learned I had a whole lot of sports fans!! We then discussed the 6 nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water, and fats. The students read from their book, and we discussed things a little more in depth. Included is my lesson plan.
